Our article: Quishing – The New Phishing Scam
When the magazine asked us to write a cybersecurity piece, we knew exactly what to cover. Quishing – QR code phishing – is one of the fastest-growing threats targeting businesses and individuals right now, and it’s one that most people simply aren’t aware of yet.
QR codes are everywhere: parking meters, restaurant menus, invoices, event flyers. They feel safe and familiar. But criminals are exploiting that trust by placing fake codes over genuine ones, embedding them in PDFs, or printing them on flyers – all designed to lead you to a false login page or malicious website.
The particularly dangerous part? Unlike a suspicious email link, a QR code scanned on a personal phone can completely bypass the security protections on your work computer.
A few things we recommend telling your team:
- 🔲 Treat every QR code like an unknown link – because it is
- 📧 Be especially cautious with codes sent by email, text or PDF, particularly for invoices or payments
- 🔍 Before scanning anything in public, check for signs of tampering – a sticker placed over the original is a common tactic
- 🌐 Never follow a QR code to make a payment; go directly to the company’s website instead
A few seconds of caution could prevent stolen passwords, financial loss or malware.
